Your initial impression of Christchurch will likely be one of a genteel green city. The drive from the airport into town taks you past tidy wooden villas and brick mansions. Christchurch has a dry, temperate climate, with mean daily maximum air temperatures of 22.5 ¡ëC (72.5 ¡ëF) in January, 11.3 ¡ëC (52.3 ¡ëF) in July. The summer climate is often moderated by a sea breeze from the Northeast In winter it is common for the temperature to fall below 0 ¡ëC (32 ¡ëF) at night. Snow falls occur on average once or twice a year in the hill suburbs and about once or twice every two years on the plain.

Akaroa

Botanical Gardens
Well maintained and with a huge variety of gardens from herb to rose, these provide a great escape from the buzz of the city all year round. Autumn sees the gardens at their most colorful.
Cathedral
The cathedral¡Çs copper-sheathed spire dominates the central square and from the viewing platform 30m up you get a great view of the city. Construction of the cathedral began in 1864, work was then halted owing to lack of funds, and the building was not finally consecrated until 1904. There are free guided tours.

Hanmer Springs
Situated in the unique alpine village of Hanmer Springs 90 minutes drive north of Christchurch, the gateway to the South Island of New Zealand. Hanmer Springs is a year round holiday destination offering a variety of outdoor activities, great cafes and accommodation. At the centre of the village is Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa, so popular that they were voted BEST VISITOR ATTRACTION at the 2004, 2005 and 2006 New Zealand Tourism Awards and also received the coveted Distinction Award in 2006.
Punting
Sink back into the velvet cushions of your boat as the Edwardian punter gently glides you down the Avon River, through the beautiful historic inner city of Christchurch. This is an iconic Christchurch experience. An attraction not to be missed!
Tram
A unique way to view the heart of Christchurch City Ride through the city centre in our delightful restored vintage trams, while your tram driver gives an informative commentary. You¡Çll have plenty of time to explore Cathedral Square or the Arts Centre, Art Gallery and Canterbury Museum, picnic in the Botanic Gardens or in Victoria Square, where you can watch the Edwardian punts floating down the Avon River. So jump aboard and enjoy your ride ? the entire trip takes about 25 minutes, but with so many things to see and do on the way, it could take all day!
