You might have heard about Japan before. You might have seen images of Japan on TV or movies. You might think that Japan is all about Mt. Fuji, Geisha, Samurai, Ninja, cars and electronics. Take our word for it. This country will offer you much, much more.

Japan is a fascinating and complex country, a major economic power, yet one that has preserved its traditional art, culture and lifestyle. It has large bustling cities while preserving its natural beauty. Beneath its modern, futuristic surface, Japan still cherishes ancient customs and traditions today.

Japan is an island country and is often referred to as the "Land of the Rising Sun". Japan consists of four major islands (Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku), surrounded by more than 4,000 smaller islands. Most of the islands are mountainous, many volcanic.

Japan has the world's tenth largest population, with about 128 million people. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes the capital city of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents. Most Japanese reside in densely populated urban areas.

Travel Warning

Japan has recently implemented a new immigration control system, requiring all foreigners entering the country to be fingerprinted and photographed. These measures are part of an anti-terrorist policy, from which only diplomats, children and some permanent residents are exempt.
