Japan Rail Pass
The JR East Pass is a great way for tourists to save money while enjoying Japan. It allows unlimited rides on all JR East train lines. Start with a trip from Narita Airport to Tokyo, for example, then ride around, and maybe hop aboard the Shinkansen or a limited express to Sendai or Nagano. In addition to JR East lines, the JR East Pass allows rides on some trains in the Izu, Naoetsu and Nikko areas. Passes are available for youth and children at a discounted rate. While in Japan, take advantage of this great offer to see a lot more for a lot less.

Who can buy a JR East Pass

A foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad, under the entry status of "temporary visitor ( 短期滞在 )".

* Japanese living abroad cannot use this pass.

"Temporary visitor" entry status, according to Japanese Immigration Law, allows a stay in Japan of 15 days or 90 days for "sight-seeing, etc."
If you apply for a "stay for sight-seeing" when you enter Japan, entry personnel will stamp your passport as "temporary visitor." Only persons who have a passport bearing this stamp can use a JR EAST PASS.

Important Notice

Even if you visit Japan with an Exchange Order, to be turned in for a Japan Rail Pass, the exchange cannot be made unless you have "temporary visitor" stamp in your passport; if you enter Japan under any other official status, such as "trainee" or "entertainer", you cannot change the Exchange Order for a Japan Rail Pass. Please note that according to strict interpretation of the Japanese Immigration Law, "temporary visitor" status differs even from other types of stays that are also for only short time periods.

How to obtain JR East Pass

1. Present your Exchange Order and obtain your JR East PASS after you arrive in Japan

You have to turn in your Exchange Order to receive your JR EAST PASS (within three months from the date the Order was issued) at one of the following applicable JR EAST stations with a JR EAST PASS exchange office. Note: You must pay on your own any transportation fare for a PASS exchange.

  1. For a 5-day or a 10-days PASS, you must specify the date that you want to start using the PASS. It can be any date within one month from the date the PASS was issued.
  2. For a Flexible 4-day PASS, the validity period is "either a consecutive or non-consecutive" total of any 4 days you like within one month from the date PASS was issued.

The definition of "one month": If you received your PASS on February 16, March 15 is the limit of one month. ("The previous date in the next month" is the key on any month.)
