Japan Rail Pass
The Kyushu Rail Pass is the perfect ticket for Kyushu sightseeing and travel. The use of this pass enables passengers to board the Kyushu Shinkansen, the pride of JR Kyushu, and the Sonic, a limited express, as often as they like while the pass is valid. Ticket holders also can use any Kyushu Railway Co. trains as often as they like while the pass is valid. (The JR Kyushu Rail Passes are valid only in the areas covered by each pass) Kyushu has many sightseeing destinations, such as Beppu's hot spring resorts, Mt. Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture, and Sakurajima in Kagoshima . Make the most of this ticket to enjoy all of Kyushu to your satisfaction.

Who can buy a JR Kyushu Pass?

The JR Kyushu Pass is a special ticket that is available only to travellers visiting Japan from foreign countries for sight-seeing. You are eligible to purchase a JR Kyushu Pass if you meet the following condition.

1. You are a foreign tourist visiting Japan from abroad for sight-seeing under the entry status of "temporary visitor" ( 短期滞在 ).

"Temporary visitor" entry status, according to Japanese Immigration Law, allows a stay in Japan of 15 days or 90 days for "sight-seeing, etc." If you apply for a "stay for sight-seeing" when you enter Japan, entry personnel will stamp your passport "temporary visitor". Only persons who have a passport bearing this stamp can use a JR Kyushu Pass.

2. You are a Japanese national living in a foreign country

a. who is qualified to live permanently in that country, or
b. who is married to a non-Japanese residing in a country other than Japan.

Note:
Persons meeting conditions a or b above must be required to show proof of same at the point of purchase of an Exchange Order and obtaining a JAPAN RAIL PASS.

Important Notice

Even if you visit Japan with an Exchange Order, to be turned in for a JR Kyushu Pass, the exchange cannot be made unless you have "temporary visitor" stamp in your passport; if you enter Japan under any other official status, such as "trainee" or "entertainer", you cannot change the Exchange Order for a Japan Rail Pass. Please note that according to strict interpretation of the Japanese Immigration Law, "temporary visitor" status differs even from other types of stays that are also for only short time periods.

How to obtain JR Kyushu Pass

1. Purchase an Exchange Order before you come to Japan

You need to purchase a JR KYUSHU PASS Exchange Order from an authorized sales agent in NZ prior to your arrival in Japan. JTB NZ is one of a few authorized sales agents for Japan's National Railway Group and offers a full selection of rail pass options.

2. Present your Exchange Order and obtain your JR KYUSHU PASS after you arrive in Japan

Upon arrival in Japan, you need to turn in the Exchange Order to receive your JR KYUSHU PASS at an applicable JAPAN RAIL station that has a JR KYUSHU PASS exchange office.

Conditions

  1. The pass may only be used by the holder specified on it.
  2. The holder must carry his or her passport when using the pass.
  3. The pass can be used on limited express trains, Kyushu Shinkansen of the Kyushu Railway Co., in ordinary reserved and non-reserved seating, and on ordinary trains of the Kyushu Railway Co. in the designated area for the pass.
  4. The pass cannot be used on sleeper trains, the Sanyo Shinkansen "bullet" train, or JR Kyushu buses.
  5. If the holder travels on a Green Car, the Green Car charge will be assessed in addition to the ordinary express charge. The pass cannot be used for private compartments.
  6. The pass cannot be used for fares on connecting or other train lines not operated by Kyushu Railway Co.
  7. The holder will be required to pay applicable fares incurred as a result of riding beyond the designated area for this pass.
  8. No refund can be made even if there are no available reserved seats and the holder must use non-reserved seating.
