Japan Rail Pass Cancellation Policy

You are entitled to refunds for cancellation as follows:

JR Pass

If your do not use your exchange order (ie present the Exchange Order and receive your actual Rail Pass) you can obtain a refund (less cancellation fee of 10%) by returning your unused Exchange Order to the JTB New Zealand Office where the original purchase was made. For a refund to be valid the application for refund must be made within 12 months of the original date of purchase.

JR East Pass

Refund of an Exchange Order or a JR East Passs. An Exchange Order that has not been turned in for a PASS can be refunded only at the same office that issued the Order within one year of the date of issue. (A cancellation fee of 10% will be charged)

The actual JR East Pass (ie the pass received after changing the Exchange Order) can only be refunded (in yen) - only before the first date for its use (for a Flexible 4-day Pass, before its first usage) - at an applicable JR East station having a JR East Pass exchange office. (10% of the yen price of the Pass will be charged as a handling fee.) No refund can be made for any reason on or after the first day of use.

Neither an Order nor a Pass can be reissued if lost or stolen: Please ensure its safekeeping.

No refunds nor extensions of the validity period can be made on a Pass in the event of train non-operation, delay, or the like.

JR West Pass

JR Kyushu Pass

If your do not use your exchange order (ie present the Exchange Order and receive your actual Rail Pass) you can obtain a refund (less cancellation fee of 10%) by returning your unused Exchange Order to the JTB New Zealand Office where the original purchase was made. For a refund to be valid the application for refund must be made within 12 months of the original date of purchase

JR Hokkaido Pass

An Exchange Order that has not been submitted for a Hokkaido Rail Pass can be returned to the office where it was purchased for a refund, within one year of the date of issue. In such cases, a handling fee and communication fee will be subtracted from the refund.

After an Exchange Order is submitted for a Hokkaido Rail Pass, the Pass can be submitted at any Hokkaido Rail Pass exchange office for a refund if it is done before the starting date of the Pass. (Ten percent of the yen price of the Pass will be charged as a handling fee.)

No refund can be made for any reason on or after the starting date of the Pass.

No refund on a Hokkaido Rail Pass can be made in the event of train service delays or suspension, etc.

Neither an Exchange Order nor a Hokkaido Rail Pass can be reissued if lost or stolen.
